Dental assistants are frequently called upon to play a variety of roles throughout the healthcare industry. Just like dentists and dental hygienists, dental assistants require some professional training, experience, and accredited certification.

Here at Dental Assisting Institute of Virginia in Colonial Heights, Virginia, we are proud to offer a professional training program for aspiring dental assistants. This is founded on a comprehensive educational experience through a 78-hour lecture series. Upon completion, the student will enter into a 50-hour internship program that is designed to give them the necessary experience to perform in the clinical environment.

Once certified, the dental assistant can play a variety of roles in oral care clinics including general dentistry, periodontics, orthodontics, endodontics, and other associated practices.

Many dental assistants start out helping with patent communication, scheduling and keeping updated records. This might also include communicating and coordinating with outsourced providers such as a dental lab or working with incoming referrals.

In some clinics’ dental assistants are called upon to also help with sterilizing equipment, developing X-rays, preparing equipment trays, and helping with patient services by passing tools to a dentist or hygienist.
